Walk Vascular acquired by Abbott
The acquisition will bring Walk Vascular’s minimally-invasive mechanical aspiration thrombectomy system, JETi, to Abbott’s endovascular product portfolio. The JETI system feature a distinctive design that divides and removes clots from the peripheral vascular system. Walk Vascular commercializes two thrombectomy systems which have received the CE Mark and FDA 510(k) clearance. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Occuity raises $2.5M in crowdfunding
The company launched a crowdfunding campaign on Seedrs and quickly hit their funding target. Additional funds raised beyond the goal will help the company accelerate the development of their novel ophthalmic diagnostic device. Occuity is developing a range of non-contacting keratometers, pachymeters, and pupillometers for human and veterinary optometry. In addition to traditional ophthalmic measurements, the company is evaluating their technology as a monitoring and diagnostic solution for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. Key strategics in the ophthalmology market include Carl Zeiss and Nidek.
TALi Digital enters licensing agreement with Akili Interactive
Under the terms of the agree, Akili will support TALi through the clinical trial and process to obtain US regulatory clearance for TALI’s digital therapeutic for the treatment of children with neurological disorders. The agreement, valued at an estimated $37.5M in milestone payments and royalties, compliments Akili’s focus on bringing gamified prescription digital therapeutics to market for the treatment of cognitive impairments.
Owlstone Medical closes $58M Series D round
The investment, led by Horizons Ventures, will support Owlstone’s development and commercialization of its Breath Biopsy platform. The proprietary platform is a non-invasive alternative to liquid and tissue biopsies that captures breath biomarkers found within droplets from exhaled breath. Owlstone offers a comprehensive solution for breath biopsy research, including the ReCIVA breath sampler, sample collection kits, and an easy-to-use benchtop analyzer. Having closed this latest round, Owlstone has raised an estimated $133.1M in funding. The company is currently partnering with large pharmaceutical companies, such as AstraZeneca, J&J, and GSK to deploy the company’s Breath Biopsy OMNI assay.
Voxelgrids is developing next-generation MRI scanners
The company’s ultra-lightweight MRI scanner is a 1.5T field system that can be mounted on to a truck to bring MRI scanning straight to the patient’s home. According to the company, their system consumes 60-70% less power than comparable systems. In early September 2021, the company announced that it had raised approximately $4.8M from a Series A round led by Zoho. Key strategics that commercialize MRI scanners include GE Healthcare, Philips, and Siemens.
EndoSound – an innovative ultrasound adaptor for endoscopes
The company has developed the EndoSound system that transforms any flexible endoscope into an endoscopic ultrasound system. The technology is intended to make endoscopic ultrasound accessible and affordable when compared to traditional big-box ultrasound systems. In July 2021, EndoSound received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA for the company’s EndoSound Vision System. EndoSound has raised an estimated $361,000 in total funding. Boston Scientific, Olympus, and Steris are major competitors in the endoscopic imaging devices market.
