Weekly Recap 7/12/24: LSI Alumni Achievements Driving Medtech and Healthtech Forward

In a successful week for the medical technology companies in the LSI Alumni community, we saw $120 million raised, new executives appointed, distribution agreements signed, and much more. Read this week’s recap for a top-line look at the latest medical device news and achievements from the LSI Alumni on the road to LSI Europe '24 in Sintra, Portugal this September.

Access Vascular

Announced the appointment of Heather Simonsen, President and CEO of Boomerang Medical, to its Board of Directors. Access Vascular catheters are designed to evade the foreign body response and complications that come with it.

Adona Medical

Raised a $33.5M Series C Financing Led by Cormorant Asset Management and TCP Health Ventures with participation from Excelstar Ventures, the PA MedTech VC Fund II, Unorthodox Ventures, AMED Ventures, and other new and existing investors. Adona Medical is working on next-generation interatrial shunting and remote patient monitoring technologies designed to manage advanced heart failure. 

Affluent Medical

Announced the company has entered into several agreements with Edwards Lifesciences (NYSE: EW) related to structural heart products. The deals cover Affluent’s Kalios adjustable mitral annulus and mitral valve technology. Under the terms of the agreements, Affluent receives $16.3 million (€15 million) upfront as a cash payment.

Aspect Biosystems

Received a $73 million investment from the Governments of Canada and British Columbia. The investment will support a $200 million, multi-year project to advance Aspect's unique clinical biomanufacturing capabilities, full-stack tissue therapeutic platform, and pipeline of bioprinted tissue therapeutics. 

Body Vision Medical

Signed new exclusive distribution agreements with Medical Scandinavia and Proton SA expanding its LungVision® system into Greece and Scandinavia, respectively. The LungVision™ platform addresses the unmet clinical need for diagnostics and treatment of lung cancer. 

Cerulean Scientific

Received a $5.4M Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) grant. The company is developing a technology platform to address common challenges with implantable medical devices, including biofilm formation and thrombosis. 

eCential Robotics

Announced the establishment of its US Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee. The company develops and markets a unique system unifying 2D/3D robotic imaging, real-time navigation, and surgical robotics. The eCential Robotics platform is a universal system open to all implants and enables third parties to develop surgical apps.

Endoron Medical

Raised a $10M Series A funding round led by LSI Alumni investor, Sofinnova Partners, with significant matching contributions from the European Innovation Council Fund (EIC Fund). The company's flagship product, the catheter-based EndoStapling solution Aortoseal, addresses the critical challenges of sealing and securing endografts used in minimally invasive abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs, particularly in complex procedures.

Genesis Innovation Group

Announced the appointment of Mr. Chance Leonard as Chief Executive Officer. Genesis Innovation Group is a leader in medical device development and commercialization. The company partners with medical device companies and surgeon-inventors to develop new technologies that advance human health and medicine.

HighLife

Announced the Appointment of Stefan Pilz as Chief Executive Officer. The company is focused on the development of a novel transcatheter replacement system for treating mitral regurgitation.

MMI (Medical Microinstruments, Inc.)

Announced an exclusive distribution agreement with Gunze Medical Limited, signaling a step toward commercializing the Symani® Surgical System across Japan. Additionally, announced its Symani system has secured regulatory approvals in 35 countries, most recently securing approvals in Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Taiwan.Also, expanded commercialization efforts in Europe by partnering with the Synektik Group, a leading integrator of innovative medical solutions that covers six countries across Eastern Europe.

RTI Surgical

Announced the appointment of LSI Alumni, Chad Croasdale as Chief Commercial Officer. RTI Surgical is a global, industry-leading contract development and manufacturing organization serving the regenerative medicine industry. 

Sensome

Signed an exclusive commercial distribution agreement for its clot-sensing guidewire in Japan with Cosmotec. The company has developed a revolutionary sensor technology that turns invasive medical devices into connected healthcare devices. 

Sinaptica Therapeutics

Announced publication in the journal Alzheimer's Research & Therapy of a study using MRI and fMRI neuroimaging analysis to evaluate structural and connectivity changes in the brains of patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s after treatment using a proprietary non-invasive precision therapy. The publication showed a statistically significant slowing in the rate of grey matter atrophy in the Precuneus, which is a key node of the Default Mode Network (DMN), the primary brain network impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. 

Stimdia Medical

Announced the appointment of Kristen Lechleiter as Executive Director of Clinical Affairs. The company has developed the pdSTIM™ System, a minimally invasive, temporary, neuromuscular stimulation system that has received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation.  

Synchron

Announced the integration of generative AI, powered by OpenAI, into its BCI platform in a new chat feature. Synchron’s mission is to develop a first-in-class commercial BCI to enable millions of people worldwide with upper limb impairment to connect with the world.

THINK Surgical

Entered into a collaboration agreement with Signature Orthopaedics. Through this collaboration, THINK Surgical will add an advanced knee design by SignatureOrtho to THINK Surgical’s ID-HUB™, a proprietary data bank of implant modules for use with its TMINI® Miniature Robotic System.

Vena Medical

Announced The Ottawa Hospital has successfully adopted Vena Medical's Balloon Distal Access Catheter (BDAC™) into its stroke treatment protocol. The Vena BDAC™ combines balloon guide and distal access catheter technologies to significantly improve the First Pass Effect (FPE) in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), a life-threatening and debilitating condition.
