This report - which is available individually or as part of a full subscription to Global PV Tracker - examines the trends and opportunities in patient caseloads and procedures volumes in general surgery markets.
General surgery procedures include a wide range of common surgical operations from gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy) and removal of the appendix (appendectomy) which are often performed with minimally invasive techniques to relatively complex open surgeries of the liver, pancreas, and esophagus. In 2017, the number of general surgery procedures performed worldwide totaled approximately 59 million. LSI forecasts these procedures to grow at a 3.6% compound annual rate over the 2017-2022 interval, exceeding 70.5 million by 2022. Although general surgery is overall a relatively mature segment, certain procedures, particularly those employing minimally invasive techniques, are exhibiting substantial growth because of their applicability to a wider range of patients. In addition, the continued expansion in availability of health care resources in developing regions is driving increased utilization of general surgery, resulting in growth in procedures at a rate in excess of that for global population growth of approximately 1% per year. This report examines the trends and opportunities in patient caseloads and procedures volumes in general surgery markets.
