Ashok C. Khandkar, Ph.D. is an accomplished medical device executive with a 28 year track record of leadership including founding and capitalizing start-ups and launching groundbreaking products.
He currently serves as the CEO of Elute, Inc. From 2015 to 2019, he served as the CEO of Xenocor, Inc. an emerging company founded on a novel laparoscopy platform. He also served on their board of directors. Prior to that he was the founding CEO of Amedica Corporation (Nasdaq, AMDA), a Salt Lake City orthopedic joint and spine ceramic implants company, from 2000 to 2009. He also served as Amedica’s President from September 2003 through December 2008. He led Amedica to an IPO with a prospective valuation of $175M with Morgan Stanley as the lead underwriter, at a 7X step up from Series A financing. . In 2010, Dr. Khandkar founded BloXR, a radiation protection company that was sold to an industry buyer in September 2014. In 1986, Dr. Khandkar started as a Sr. Scientist with Ceramatec, Inc. a Salt Lake City advanced ceramic materials company where he rose to become VP Technology from 1993 to 1999 and started its solid oxide fuel cell program. Dr. Khandkar has more than 27 years of experience in senior managerial positions in ceramics, medical product development and manufacturing with responsibility for finance, strategic planning and business development. He is an inventor on 40 U.S. and international patents. Dr. Khandkar has authored more than 30 papers related to ceramics technology. He has served as the vice-chair of the High Temperature Materials Division of the Electrochemical Society and is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Materials Science and Engineering Department of the University of Utah. Dr. Khandkar earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Arizona State University. In January 2010, he won the Utah Governor’s Science & Technology Medal for successfully pioneering a new class of biomaterials for orthopedics and growing a venture- backed high-tech industry. He won the HAP Paul Award of the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty in 2007 for silicon nitride based hip implants.
He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Pioneer Theater Company, University of Utah. He is an Adjunct Professor in the Matl. Science and Eng Dept, U of Utah. Dr. Khandkar earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Arizona State University in 1985.
